How to Detect and Avoid Love Scammers

0

Relationship Fraud
Relationship fraud is increasingly common today. Typically, a man targets a single, financially stable, working, or businesswoman under the guise of genuine love that will lead to marriage. Once the target becomes emotionally attached, the scammer, who presents himself as a wealthy businessman with international projects, multimillion-shilling contracts, and frequent travel locally, intentionally creates an image of success and constant busyness, both locally and abroad.

He showers the victim with affection, attention, and carefully crafted charm of love, creating emotional “vibes” that blind her to obvious red flags.

In some cases, the scammer goes as far as initiating marriage discussions with the victim’s family. On his side, however, no genuine relatives are ever introduced. Instead, he may hire individuals to pose as family members, who are, in reality, part of the scam.

Once emotional control is firmly established, the scammer begins to appear stressed, depressed, or disturbed. When you questioned, you open the gate, this becomes the moment he executes the fraud. He claims his lucrative contract is facing financial challenges and urgently requires a large sum often millions to resolve the issue. To make the story convincing, he presents fake receipts, messages, and financial documents.

Driven by trust, love, or the desire to support a “future husband,” the victim either offers help or is directly asked for financial assistance, could be inform of loan. Once the money is transferred, the affection abruptly ends. The scammer disappears, leaving the victim financially strained, emotionally broken, and psychologically distressed.

How to Protect Yourself from Relationship Fraud

  • Always conduct due diligence and background checks before fully committing to a relationship.
  • Never allow love to blind your judgment. Avoid giving money to anyone who is not your legal spouse.
  • Proper background checks can reveal a person’s true identity, family background, origin, associates, criminal history, and life patterns.
  • While someone may hide their character temporarily, they cannot erase their past. History often repeats itself.
  • Involve trusted friends and family members, especially when a relationship feels rushed. Outsiders often see red flags more clearly.
  • Listen carefully to advice. Not all opinions are genuine, but assess them wisely and separate truth from deception.
  • Ask your partner direct questions. If they become defensive, avoid clarification, or divert conversations, take it as a warning sign.
  • Avoid relationship pressure or fear-driven decisions, such as feeling “too late” to marry. Anxiety can lead to costly mistakes.
