Beware of University and College Admission Scams in Kenya

Every year, thousands of students celebrate after being placed in universities and colleges through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). It is an exciting milestone that marks the beginning of a new chapter in higher education.

As universities continue to digitize admissions, hostel applications, fee payments, and other student services, cybercriminals are also exploiting these online processes to target unsuspecting students and parents.

How the Scam Works

Not every notice, memo, email, SMS, or website you receive is from the institution you intend to join. Fraudsters create fake websites that closely resemble official university websites and use them to deceive students into making payments or providing personal information.

For example, a student may receive a memo instructing them to book a hostel through what appears to be the university’s official website. After completing the booking, they are prompted to enter their M-Pesa PIN to pay for the accommodation. Unfortunately, the payment is sent directly to scammers instead of the university.

How to Verify a Genuine University Website

Before making any payment or submitting your personal information, take a few minutes to verify that the website and communication are legitimate.

1. Check the Website Domain

Most accredited universities in Kenya use the .ac.ke domain for their official websites.

Examples include:

  • uonbi.ac.ke – University of Nairobi
  • ku.ac.ke – Kenyatta University
  • jkuat.ac.ke – Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
  • mu.ac.ke – Moi University

Be cautious of websites that imitate these domains by adding extra words, numbers, or using different domain extensions.

2. Verify the Email Address

Official university emails should also end with the institution’s .ac.ke domain. Be cautious of emails sent from free email services or suspicious domains that closely resemble the official one.

3. Confirm Official Memos and Notices

A genuine university memo should normally:

  • Be issued through the institution’s official communication channels.
  • Be printed on the university’s official letterhead.
  • Include the institution’s official stamp (where applicable).
  • Be dated and signed by an authorized officer.

If you have any doubts, contact the university directly using the contact details published on its official website.

Stay Alert

Scammers rely on excitement, urgency, and confusion during the admission period. Always verify the authenticity of any website, email, memo, or payment request before taking action.

A few minutes spent confirming the source can save you from losing your money and personal information.

Don’t become a victim of online admission scams. Verify first, then proceed.
